HMIS - Homeless Management Information System
What is HMIS - Homeless Management Information System
HMIS is a case management database that tracks clients being serviced by direct service-providing agencies. The data collected by HMIS serves multiple functions, most notably:
• Data collection that gives us a better understanding of the needs of the homeless in a given area in the United States;
• Acts as a case-management tool by allowing clients, their service histories, and rehabilitation progress to be monitored;
• Generates data used in various reports to local governments, such as Consolidated Plans, Governor's Office, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Annual Assessment Report provided to the United Stated Congress; and
• Generates data used for various grants and funding competitions, such as HUD's Continuum of Care Competition.
Who Uses HMIS?
HUD and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) mandate that communities receiving funds from the McKinney-Vento Homelessness Act for use in Supportive Housing Programs, Shelter Plus Care, Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), and other homeless housing and prevention programs must report their services using HMIS.
For our Continuum of Care (FL-504CoC), we currently have 13 agencies reporting on over 100 homeless and homelessness-prevention housing and services programs throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties.
